What?
Reflective questioning is an instructional technique that encourages students to think critically and reflect on their learning. It involves asking thought-provoking questions that prompt students to analyse and evaluate their own thinking, understanding, and problem-solving processes.
How?
Step 1. Set the stage for reflection. Introduce the topic and purpose of reflection. Create a safe environment for sharing. Explain the importance of reflection for deepening understanding.
Step 2. Pose thought-provoking questions. Ask open-ended questions that prompt critical thinking. Encourage connections, analysis, and considering different perspectives. Ask questions like: “How does this relate to your experiences? What are the implications?”
Step 3. Facilitate meaningful reflection. Give time for individual reflection. Engage in small-group or whole-class discussions. Actively listen, probe deeper, summarise key points, and encourage application.
Why?
Benefits of reflective questioning:
enhances critical-thinking
promotes meta-cognition
deepens retention and understanding
facilitates self-directed learning
