What?

Token economies refer to classroom behaviour management systems where students earn tokens or rewards for desired behaviours, which can be exchanged for incentives or privileges, as a way to motivate and reinforce positive behaviour choices.

How?

Step 1. Define desired behaviours and token rewards. Behaviours may include completing assignments, participating in discussions, or following rules. Tokens may include stickers, stars, or points. Ensure that they can be easily administered and tracked.

Step 2. Establish token system with clear rules and expectations. Explain how tokens are earned, how they can be exchanged for rewards or privileges, and any consequences or procedures for inappropriate behaviour.

Step 3. Implement consistently and review. Consistently award tokens for desired behaviours, while providing feedback to students on their progress. Review and adjust the system over time to ensure it remains engaging and effective.

Why?

Benefits of token economies:

  • offers positive reinforcement

  • facilitates behaviour management
