What?

Constructivism is a learning theory that views students as active participants in their own learning. They construct their understanding of concepts and knowledge through prior knowledge, experiences, and interactions with their environment.

When?

Behaviourism was at its peak as a theory during the early to mid-20th century, particularly in the 1920s to 1950s. It was led by influential figures such as Ivan Pavlov, John Watson, and B.F. Skinner.

How?

A teacher applies constructivist principles when they create opportunities for students to explore, question, collaborate, and reflect on their learning, rather than simply delivering information.

Why?

Constructivism has transformed the way we think about:

  • active learning

  • personalised learning

  • teachers as facilitators

  • motivation and engagement

  • real-world application of learning
